Plaque is a sticky film that clings to the teeth and threatens to harm your entire oral health if you’re not careful. In fact, plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease, which are the two most dangerous dental issues in the world today.

Because plaque is tough to see, you won’t know when your smile is in danger. This is why you need to attend your dental cleaning appointments every six months. The cleaning is the only way to completely remove the plaque and tartar (tartar is the future form of plaque if it’s not removed regularly; this substance is extremely toxic) from your smile. However, you might experience a couple signs that say plaque is harming your teeth and gums. One sign is swollen, red, and irritated gums. The gums might even bleed on occasion. Another sign is yellow or brown deposits on the teeth above the gumline. Remember, at these points, it’s very important to schedule an appointment with your dentist, Dr. Barrie Suzanne Zweier.

To prevent plaque buildup or remove plaque regularly, you need to keep up on oral hygiene (brushing twice a day and flossing and rinsing daily), attend your checkups every six months, and have a tooth-healthy and balanced diet.
